One example of this can be someone interpreting their favourite music artists' style and attempting to master this in their own way. This is one of the most popular ways that music and fashion go together as it is directly recognising and being influenced by said music artist. This takes an unusual turn as the popular genre of music changes and fashion then completely changes their look in order to suit this new genre of music.
Fashion and music is also used to protest and this was done a considerable amount in the 60s and 70s; this is known as the counterculture of the 1960s. These people fought for peace in general and protested against war and the destruction of nature and did this through music and their specific fashion tastes. Creativity was at a high when the hippies of this certain time were prone to taking part in non-conformist activities. Due to their feelings of freedom this was one of the most creative eras and the passion for music and freedom with their clothing was explosive across the media. Many bands joined in with this new sense of freedom and protested such as the highly acclaimed band The Beatles, Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan to name a few.
Band t-shirts have always been a popular way of supporting a specific band and have remained a close tie between the relationship of the music industry and the fashion industry. In the 21st century these band shirts have become more popular than ever as major retailers are distributing them like never before to aspiring young music lovers and fashionistas.
The most important turn in this ongoing relationship has been artists bringing out their own fashion ranges and major fashion brands actively participating in the distribution of music. Music artists such as Amy Winehouse, Pixie Lott and Jay-Z have all released their own clothing lines which include an array of clothing which is similar to their own so that fans can aspire to look and dress like them.
Alternatively, brands such as Fred Perry have been active throughout the music industry for a long time with specific music artists being the face of their brand. This particular brand has introduced a subculture section in which they promote gigs, introduce aspiring artists and regularly update the public on their recent findings.
Recently there has been an up-rise within the relationship within music and fashion and it is inevitable that this will only keep on rising. Bands and fashion brands will in the near future be collaborating together in order to bring the public exactly what they need.
